Copyright Protections

Chronicles is a staunch defender of copyright. We created ChroNewsRoom to implement "appropriate protections for property rights of authors and other holders of intellectual property" (Clause 4, Section 8 of the Chronicles Bylaws).

ChroNewsRoom is a repository where content creators can opt to have their content stored and made available to other Chronicles Publishers worldwide. Only those affiliated with a duly licensed Chronicles Publisher (CP) can submit and/or retrieve content from ChroNewsRoom.

Why Submit Content to ChroNewsRoom?

When you check "Yes - Post My Content in the Article Repository" in the Submission Form you are making your content available to other CPs worldwide on a per use fee basis. This allows you to collect a reuse fee from each CP who publishes your content on their site. If you submit an article via This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it instead of using our online Submit Form, besure to mention you want your content stored in the ChroNewsRoom Repository.

How Much Could Your Writing Earn?

Suppose you submit a 2,500 word article to ChroNews and elect to have it stored in the repository. With the content resident in ChroNewsRoom many of the CPs worldwide might pay $50.00 or more to reuse that content.

If ten CPs purchase the article it generates $500.00. Suppose the article is so good, one hundred CPs reuse it, then the article has earned $5,000.00

Content Revenue Sharing - A Clarification

The above amount must be adjusted to reflect the fact that reuse fees are shared among the author, the CP the author is affiliated with and Chronicles Worldwide.

The content creator, i.e. the author of an article receives seventy percent of the total reuse fees the article generates. The "affiliated" CP receives eighteen(18%) percent of the fees and Chronicles Worldwide (which maintains the repository) receives twelve (12%) percent.

For CPs, this creates a source of cash flow other than advertising to help underwrite the costs of local newsgathering and reporting. For Chronicles Worldwide the twelve percent helps underwrite the cost of maintaining the ChroNewsRoom repository and the on going work of restoring truth to journalism.

This sharing of the reuse revenue is essential if the system is to operate optimally. There has to be "something in it" for all parties. What is in it for authors is obvious. Authors have the opportunity to continue receiving income from an article indefinitely. This allows content creators to better monetize their intellectual properties. Ultimately, the "consumers" of our content benefit the most because the opportunity to be fairly compensated for their creative efforts tends to attract the most talented content creators.

Content Contributor Affiliation

Every Content Contributor (author) is affiliated with at least one CP. However, there is nothing to prevent an author from affiliating with more than one CP or with other organizations. Before authors submit content, they choose the CP with whom they wish to be affiliated. If your town does not have a local Chronicles you (or someone you know) might qualify for a FREE License to Publish Your Own.

Any given article can only have one point of entry into the ChroNewsRoom database, i.e., through the CP with whom the author is affiliated.

When Truth Matters® we welcome content contributed by all who are dedicated to

Writing Guidelines for Chronicles & ChroNews Dot Com

"The easiest thing in the world for any reader to do is to stop reading."1

Two Kinds of Editorial Content - Reports & Opinions

Reports

Every Chronicles' report piece receives a rating of one to five stars by the topic Editor.  Every aspect of five-star reports must be verified as true by the author, the topic Editor, the CP and at least one independent evaluator (generally a member of the Territorial Governing Body). In practice, the highest rating a report piece can receive will be four and a half stars for a piece that contains no more than one non-verified claim.

Only in those rare cases where there is absolutely no question whatsoever of the validity of the entire piece and it is totally void of any partisan spin can a report receive five-stars. Four-star-content contains two non-verified claims. Three-star has three, two-star contains four and one star reports contain five unconfirmed claims or statements.  Articles with greater than five non-verified claims are rejected by the topic Editor. One-star pieces (five unconfirmed claims) are not encouraged.

Accordingly, readers understand the lower the rating the more likely it contains information that could not be confirmed or verified.  Authors are required to flag unconfirmed claims by placing a subscript number at the end of unconfirmed claims - like this: first unconfirmed claim1, second unconfirmed claim2, third unconfirmed claim3, fourth unconfirmed claim4 and fifth unconfirmed claim5.

Thus, readers are informed as to what in a report could not be verified.

OPINIONS

Opinion pieces are marked as such and receive no rating.  The personal opinion of a report's author or of a story source can be interjected into a report but such opinions must be immediately followed by [op]. Before content is published, the CP with whom the author is affiliated must certify the rating applied to the content is appropriate.  Substantial fines are imposed upon CPs who violate the trust readers bestow upon Chronicles and habitual violators are subject to revocation of their License to Publish by the local Territorial Governing Body.

It is the writer's job to keep the reader engaged. The acronym "AIDA" applies here.

Action           Capture the readers Attention. "Put it all in the first line."2

Interest         Pique the reader's Interest.

Desire           Expand the reader's Desire to know more.

Action           Inspire the reader to take Action.

Within the first paragraph and using very few words a good writer will attract the reader's attention often with "anecdotal leads" or pithy quotes.

No later than the end of the second paragraph, the reader must know the topic. Equally important, the reader needs to understand why knowing more about the topic is important.

At an unexpressed level, the reader's mind is continually asking, "Why should I care?" Remember, "Everybody listens to radio station WIIFM - What's In It For Me."3

Even if writing is not your principal activity, at ChroNews we hold all content creators to the high standards of professional journalists. We define "journalism" as a commitment to discovering truth regarding the what, why, who, when, where and how of the stories affecting our lives

Once discovered, truth demands reporting. This is authentic journalism and an honest journalist is a truthful chronicler of what is discovered in the pursuit of knowledge.

When Truth Matters® we welcome content contributed by all who are dedicated to
Non Partisan Pursuit of Truth®.
