What Will Be?

The Chronicles Plan is about the future. Since I authored it, you are forgiven if you think it is about my future. Actually, the future the Plan addresses is YOURS!

Late in his career Bob Dylan, the poet laureate of my generation described us well with this line “My future is already a thing of the past”. Many of my generation have already departed from this “mortal coil” and time is short for the rest of us.

Is Publishing for You?

If you discover you are particularly adept at enrolling Search for Solutions partners, then perhaps you should consider applying your earnings to the purchase price of a License to Publish Your Own Chronicles. You might even qualify for a FREE License.

If you excelled at enrolling partners in Search for Solutions, chances are you would also be successful generating longer-term cash flow. Most news and information endeavors rely on advertising support to sustain them. Even public broadcasting organizations must pay their bills and call upon corporations for a substantial portion of their sustenance. An understanding of, or at the very least an appreciation of the ability to sell or persuade should be included in any publisher’s skill set.

How Expensive is Enrollment?

All Search for Solutions partners receive fifty-two weeks of exposure for a message of their choosing whether they enroll at the highest or the lowest level.

Let’s look at the cost per day for the highest, i.e., a Platinum Sponsor ~ Level 1. The cost comes to less that $3.00 a day. The lowest enrollment level is $125.00 for the entire year (a cost per day of less than 34 cents).

What does it say about an organization that is unwilling to invest such a paltry amount to support a Community dedicated to a Search for Solutions to society’s more vexing issues?

Why Ask for So Little?

If ChroNews is such a terrific idea, why not just go to a Venture Capitalist, pick up ten million and get to work creating a Community dedicated to solving society’s problems. The problem with that approach is the other Golden Rule.

If you are trying to create an independent, truly non-biased news organization, such concentrated power might just be a bit counterproductive.

Do you think a Venture Capitalist would invest millions without insisting on control? Me neither!

Venture Capital funding was rejected because it would only create what we already have too much off - media under the control of a few. How has that worked so far?

Additionally, by funding the Chronicler Community through support from a widely diverse group of Solutions Sponsors and limiting their support to less than $3.00 a day, the Community's independent and non partisan approach to solving systemic problems does not incur undue pressure from any one organization.

How to Enroll a Business or Organization

First, search the Directory of Solutions Sponsors to make sure the organization has not already elected to support the Chroniclers Community. Check just before you make the contact because Solutions Sponsors are enrolling constantly.

If you know the owner or director of the organization personally or if you do business with them, there is nothing more powerful then a direct personal contact. As intimidating as it may seem to ask a business owner or head of an organization to make a financial investment, just remember the worst that can happen, they might say “No”. Then again, they could say “Yes”.

A simple way to approach a prospective Solutions Sponsor is to ask, “Would you agree we are facing some unprecedented problems?” If “Yes” continue with, “If you had an opportunity to support a non-partisan effort to solve problems and at the same time receive some terrific exposure for your business/organization, would you want to know more?”

If the answer is “Yes” then you are talking with a potential partner in the Search for Solutions. A little encouragement from you may be all they need to become a part of the solutions being pursued through the Chroniclers Community.

Try to See It My Way

Whether you are trying to persuade someone to make an investment or you are persuading him or her to see your point of view, remember, “Some will, some won’t, so what there are some waiting”. Do not waste time on those who just do not get it, move on to those who are waiting to become part of the solution.

On the occasion when your invitation is declined, all you need worry about is how graciously you take the “No”. In the final analysis, we are never responsible for any behavior other than our own. Those saying “No” may not be demonstrating much of a sense of responsibility for helping to solve society’s systemic problems, but you exercise appropriate “respondibility” when you remain non-confrontational.

Of course, an organization may feel they have done enough to help solve shared problems because they “gave at the office”. Then again, can you ever do too much good? Additionally, the dollar amount required to support the Chronicler Community is so small, nearly every organization should become a Solutions Sponsor.

The invitation to enroll is first and foremost an opportunity for the “invited” to show their true colors. Are they willing to pony up to be part of the solution or are they content to continue complaining about how difficult it is to survive in this present economy? On the other hand, perhaps they are among the few who are benefiting from our present crisis and it would be against their interest to solve the problems that are feeding them.

The Web as a Tool

Social networking sites can be effective tools for Chroniclers to invite potential Search for Solutions partners.

In mounting an effort to enroll a specific organization, use the tools available to you at Facebook, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Tweeter, etc. Be creative, but above all be respectful.

What’s it All About?

If you are reluctant to get involved in the Chronicler Community because you fear your efforts will promote the personal aggrandizement of one individual or a small group of individuals then you obviously have not read the Chronicles Bylaws.

O.K., if Chronicles is not about one person’s gain then what is it about? ChroNews at the time of this writing came about because of my efforts and those of an intrepid Webmaster who gave countless free hours of labor for every paid hour.

As for my motives, I began working on ChroNews after retiring from over thirty-five years in the publishing industry and taking to heart something Horace Mann said (the Father of American Education),

“Be ashamed to die until you have achieved a victory for humanity.”

As impressed as I may be with my personal growth (the twenty-year-old version of me left a lot of room for improvement), I must confess I cannot claim to have won a victory for humanity.

Of course, I am old enough to have won one. Heck I am old enough to just “forgetaboutit”. Relax on the sun deck, sipping my favorite beverage, playing guitar and just letting the world pass by. If my luck holds out, who knows I could even die before it all goes to hell.

Being retired, I do not have to work. However, feeling my generation had a hand in creating the present predicament humanity finds itself in; I cannot sit idly by without trying to be part of the solution.

The Big Mistake

If someone forced me to choose the single most critical mistake my generation made I would have to say it was our failure to focus on truth. In a distortion of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity, my generation popularized the notion that “everything is relative”.

From there it is but a short putt to “there are no absolutes”. If you accept there are no absolute truths then what point is there in pursuing truth?

Rather than setting out on a quest for truth (since we concluded there was none), too many of those in my generation, who represented the two primary schools of thought regarding the nature of humanity, decided to vilify those with the opposing point of view. Hence the ever-escalating partisan divide that has characterized most of my time here.

Those with the conservative worldview saw liberals as the enemy and vice-versa. Meanwhile humanity’s real enemy, ignorance continues to darken future prospects for far too many of the world’s inhabitants.

The next time someone tells you “there are no absolutes”, ask if they are absolutely sure of that? If they answer “Yes” then they have just conceded there is at least one absolute truth. They have also revealed they are a practitioner of circular reasoning.

If truth exists then, perhaps if we work at it hard enough with a sufficiently open-mind, we could discover some. Just because, at any given point we may not be in possession of the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth does not mean truth is not knowable.

On the other hand, just because we are absolutely sure we are right on an issue does not make it so. It takes a big person to admit he was mistaken. It takes an even bigger person to do something to correct the mistake. Unfortunately, if truthful to ourselves we have to admit most of us are rather small when it comes to admitting mistakes.

If more individuals could get to where they are at least respectful enough to hear the opinions of others it could lead to less contentiousness and leave more energy to solve the daunting challenges my generation failed to address. That is a role you, as a member of the Chroniclers Community could fill.

The Truth Seekers Guide

It might be useful to consider the Truth Seekers Guide as a path to diminishing strife and increasing peace. The Truth Seeker’s Question, in particular has proven especially beneficial to my inner peace. It asks, “If what you believe were not true would you want to know?” Hopefully, most say “Yes”. Nevertheless, some have looked me dead in the eye and said “No”. The “no’s” are obviously not part of the solution.

It is healthy to reexamine the evidence for beliefs we hold. Indeed the easiest person for me to fool is me. Truth is often elusive. When we expend more energy proving the other person wrong, instead of listening, it leaves insufficient time to pursue truth. This precludes the empowerment achievable from a partnership united in a genuine “pursuit of truth”.

A man long ago, too weak to follow his own heart famously asked, “What is truth?” When we have two diametrically opposed opinions they cannot both be right. But, they can both be wrong.

My working definition of truth is “that which most people (given a complete understanding of all relevant facts) would conclude”.

Of course, we seldom find ourselves in possession of “a complete understanding of all relevant facts”. That is why a Community of millions of Chroniclers is so vital to the Search for Solutions. By working together collaboratively, each of us becomes informed and enlightened to an extent unattainable when working in isolation. With Chroniclers all over the world identifying, investigating, and chronicling issues of concern we create the best knowledge based solutions to the many problems we share.

Back to the Future

Historically free nations have counted on news media to deliver facts and to report truthfully, but in my lifetime, I have been an eyewitness to a dramatic decline in the reliability of what big media tells us.

Today’s news organizations seem to fall into three categories. In Russia, China, and countries like Iran it is State run media – very little truth there.

Where there is an absence of truth, there is a scarcity of useful knowledge and limited understanding of what is going on. Without knowing what really happened how can society fashion effective solutions? How long must the Councils of the "Wise” fail before we realize the solution is us?

Festering problems contribute to world volatility. Unpredictability, throughout history has caused the death of countless innocent victims. A change can only come about when we act collaboratively to uncover truth and apply that knowledge to solving problems. That is the purpose of the Chroniclers Community.

Now in countries with a free press, like the United States, news more and more falls into two categories. Entertainment masquerading as news or "news" in the tank for either the right or the left and where’s the truth in that?

I know there are rare exceptions to what I am saying. Even the most partisan news outlet will occasionally get it right just as a broken clock reports the correct time twice a day. However, truth in journalism must be the rule not the exception to the rule, if we are to reverse the erosion of freedoms where they have existed and expand liberty where tyranny reigns.

Relevance to You

The Chronicles Plan for restoring truth in journalism with the aim of anticipating, identifying and solving problems should be of interest to you, especially if you happen to be a member of the generation stuck with solving the unprecedented problems you have inherited.

Please ask yourself what kind of future will you and your children have if truth in journalism is not restored? Has not big media already demonstrated they are unreliable truth seeking partners?

When more are in possession of truth, society is better able to demand the right solutions. No problem can be solved without knowing the truth about what caused the problem in the first place. Only by identifying real problems and confronting them with the right solutions can problems be resolved in a manner that advances the well-being of most of us.

Solved problems improve the social fabric that binds us including the economic climate. A better economy directly affects not only your personal comfort and security but also your ability to help others solve their problems and advance in their pursuit of happiness. Truth benefits all of society, except for those few who benefit from a lie.

The Chroniclers Community is made up of those in society who would rather know a hard truth then settle for a soft lie. Chroniclers are more interested in solutions then a particular ideology.
